Happy 2013! New year, new homes, new blog. So in the spirit of new beginnings (or at least for what it's worth new best intentions) here are some thoughts for some simple ways to update/refresh your home. Go on, give one (or two) a go.
- Put all the things you love on display – reclaim your favorite things from the backs of your cupboards – you'll be amazed at what you'll find.
- (That does not however apply to our music/film collection. A wall of CD’s/DVDs does not a home furnishing make.)
- Embrace room swapping. What started in the living room, doesn’t have to stay there.
- Odd is in – photos and home furnishings in odd numbers for greatest effect. And while I’m at it, symmetry be gone.
- Easy does it. Be realistic with timescales. Take it one step and one room at a time.
- Keep drama in small doses. Feature wall, fine. Feature living room? I don’t think so.
- Embrace multilayer textures and fabrics. Use them to build warmth in a room and soften harsh geometric lines.
- Less is usually more. Just because you have space, it doesn’t mean you have to fill it. Minimal furniture makes a room appear more spacious.
- For large spaces don’t be scared of using furniture as dividers. Break up rooms by function, and remember, rugs are your friends.
- Have fun and enjoy the ride.
